Validation of Aboriginal identification algorithms in the APDC and ABS Mortality Data using the 45 and Up Study.

Investigators:

Louisa Jorm (PI), Emily Banks, Alastair Leyland, Sandra Eades, Tim Churches, Mary Haines, Sanja Lujic and Deborah Randall

Project aim(s):

  • To investigate the factors (hospital, person or admission) that predict ‘correct’ Aboriginal identification in hospital inpatient and mortality data, with self-identified Aboriginal status in the 45 and Up Study serving as a ‘gold standard’;
  • To develop a set of candidate algorithms for improving Aboriginal identification for use with linked hospital inpatient and mortality data, informed by (1);
  • To investigate the comparative validity (sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values) of these algorithms; and
  • To investigate how estimated Aboriginal rates and rate ratios for hospital separations, hospital outcomes and mortality vary according to the algorithm used.
