Utilisation of cancer treatment services in people aged 45 years and over in NSW: A population-based study

Investigators:

Michael Barton (PI), Bin Jalaludin, Jesmin Shafiq

Project aim(s):

Cancer treatment utilisation has been shown to be below optimum evidence-based benchmarks for a range of tumour types. Additionally, underutilisation of radiotherapy for various cancers in South Australia and NSW has been reported in a few ‘Patterns of Care (POC)’ studies. POC studies for cancer have also described geographic and socio-economic variations in the use of cancer treatment services but these have been expensive, time consuming and are often out of date because of the time lags generated by registration and collection of data. This study aims to identify strategies that will lead to better utilisation of cancer treatment services and in the longer term better health outcomes for the target population.
