Risk characteristics, hospital admissions, and outcomes of patients with chronic diseases in NSW, 2005-2009

Project aim(s):

This project, being led by Dr Richard Matthews, Deputy Director General of NSW Department of Health aims to investigate factors associated with hospital admissions (planned/ unplanned) and re-admissions of older patients diagnosed with the five chronic diseases in NSW; and to investigate the influence of health care utilisation on disease outcomes, taking into account the patients’ risk characteristics.

The baseline questionnaire data will provide self-reported information on socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle, social factors, and history of medical conditions. The 45 and Up Study information will also provide data on utilisation of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Primary Care Items of Study participants through its existing link with the data from Medicare Australia.
