Project aim(s):
Led by Professor Mark Harris, Executive Director Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity at University of NSW, this project aims to increase our understanding of the pattern and factors influencing the referral of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients to cancer care specialists after diagnosis in general practices. The results of this project will be used to inform and guide cancer services in Australia about the most effective way to ensure that patients are referred promptly and appropriately to multi-disciplinary specialist teams.
The study hypothesises that there are discontinuities in the referral process resulting in untimely and inappropriate referral of patients with CRC between general practice and specialist services, and that patient expectations are not being met by current practice.
