Prescription medication and traffic crashes among older drivers

Investigators:

Soufiane Boufous (PI), Nick Glozier, Sharon Naismith

Project aim(s):

To date, while drivers aged 60 years and older are less likely to be involved in traffic crashes compared with younger drivers, they are more likely to be seriously injured or die as a result of a traffic crash.  An area which has received relatively little attention in research is the impact of prescription medication on traffic crashes in older drivers, therefore this study aims to estimate the impact of prescription medications, particularly those taken as a result of a number of chronic medical conditions, on the crash outcomes of older drivers by linking the 45 and Up Study to existing administrative databases.
