Investigation of the effect of progestagen-only contraceptives on fracture risk

Investigators:

Associate Professor Emily Banks (PI) and Dr Mark Clements

Project aim(s):

The project will use data from female participants in the 45 and Up Study and will occur in two phases:

  • Phase 1. During this phase, analysis of cross-sectional data from the 45 and Up Study questionnaire will relate historical data on use of progestagen-only contraceptives to the reported occurrence of fractures in the previous 5 years. There will be adjustment for potential confounding factors, including age, menopausal status, body-mass-index, and use of hormone replacement therapy.
  • Phase 2. During this phase, prospective questionnaire data will be linked to follow-up data on fracture from NSW hospital admissions for fracture and emergency department data on fracture. Retrospective linkage with data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme on use of hormonal contraceptives will be explored and used where appropriate. Data on potential confounding factors will be derived from the 45 and Up Study questionnaire.
