Investigation of the costs of treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer

Investigators:

Marion Haas, Jane Hall (PI), Patricia Kenny

Project aim(s):

Led by Professor Jane Hall, Director, Centre for Health Economics Research & Evaluation, University of Technology Sydney, this study aims to provide a more robust estimate of the medical costs for treating non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in NSW by doing a ‘bottom up’ costing and providing an average cost per person for the treatment of NMSC, both to patients and to Medicare.

It will also investigate differences in the medical costs of treatment for NMSC among population sub-groups, particularly examining differences between rural and urban residents and differences by socio-economic status which may be indicative of screening practices and access to services.The costs will be compared between different sub-groups including rural and urban residents, and high and low income groups, as will the location of treatment (in-hospital or not).
