Impact of socioeconomic status on access to primary health care and subsequent health status

Investigators:

Professor Mark Harris (PI), Dr Maria Tessa Ho, Dr Lisa Jackson Pulver and Associate Professor Bin Jalaludin

Project aim(s):

This project will use baseline questionnaire data from the 45 and Up Study linked to Medicare Australia data on GP consultations and pathology as well as measures of health outcomes and hospitalisation from the NSW Inpatients Statistics Collection and a number of additional core health datasets, including: death registrations and ABS mortality collection; NSW Central Cancer Registry; Medical Benefits Schedule; and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Specifically, this project aims to examine the impact of differential access to primary health care on subsequent health status using measures of socioeconomic status and health. Specifically, the aims are:

  • To identify differential access to quality primary health care – the use of preventive care, the length of consultations, payments for chronic disease management, screening

  • To measure the impact of preventive health and chronic disease management – lifestyle behaviour, mortality, morbidity, hospital admissions

  • To determine the association between differential access to quality primary health care for preventive care and chronic disease management and health status and hospitalisation.
