Ethics approvals

The intent of the 45 and Up Study is clear: to develop a major longitudinal dataset that will provide high-quality data as a common research resource on the health and health service use of the NSW population aged 45 and over. The data collection will be conducted openly and ethically with due regard to individuals’ personal right to decide on participation. The dataset will only be used for research that is ethical and scientifically sound. The Study’s Community and Ethical Oversight Committee will provide advice to the Management Committee and the Sax Institute Board for ensuring observance of these principles, but this responsibility will be shared by everyone involved in the execution of the Study and the use of its resources.

The 45 and Up Study has ethics approval from the University of NSW Human Research Ethics Committee, its primary ethics committee.

The Study also has in principle permission for data linkage from the Human Research Ethics Committees of the following organisations:

Department of Health and Ageing

Australian Institute for Health and Welfare

Department of Veterans’ Affairs

Sydney South West Area Health Service
